My week at Custard: Hands-on experience in PR

July 21, 2025 by CUSTARD

Since I started studying film, media and English for A-level, I’ve been fascinated with media, and the power of the written communication that comes with it. But in school and college, you feel like your hard work doesn’t always contribute to anything tangible. Work experience with Custard has provided me with a chance to explore my written, creative and self-regulation skills in a real-life context, while having my work used to create an actual impact on the industry.

From the first day, I felt instantly supported by the whole team. Everyone was more than eager to answer all my questions and were generous with taking time out of their day to explain tasks and processes to me. Naturally, I was anxious about making a mistake or not meeting expectations with my projects, but their friendliness and patience with me allowed me to work with more confidence over time.

I was set a wide range of tasks, from supporting editorial about weddings to designing Instagram graphics for an awards ceremony. The diverse programme truly felt curated towards giving me the best experience possible, providing me with the most authentic, hands-on view into the wide world of PR. Getting stuck in to so many different aspects of what Custard does also allowed me to determine on my own, which elements of this industry excite me most. This clarity will be greatly valuable to take with me as I face the intimidating task of considering my future career path after university.

As well as an insight into Custard specifically, | was incredibly grateful to receive a preview of what life would be like working in an office in London. Even though it was daunting, I attempted to blend in with the sea of habituated train commuters, and navigate through to and from the office (with the help of Google Maps), Although it was slightly terrifying, I slowly became more comfortable traversing the London streets. The priceless experience of participating in meetings and day-to-day operations of an office also gave me an invaluable and realistic perception of what my working life may look like in the future.

A huge thank you to everyone at Custard for being so kind and encouraging. I’ve learned so much in such a short period of time, and I’m leaving feeling inspired and excited to continue my journey. I’m so thankful for all the amazing connections I’ve made, and I hope to stay in touch with you all!

This isn’t just a comeback, this is an M&S comeback – well almost!

This was the snack sized campaign that grabbed my attention this month and I can’t get enough of it. It’s picky, it’s proud and it’s perfectly timed.
